I have a 1984 40 hp Evinrude E40ELCR. I am having repeated failure of the upper ignition coil. It works fine for many outings then fails. It will p*** the resistance tests but will not p*** the spark gap test. Install a new coil and all is fine for many more outings then fails again. Any ideas?

A repeated failure of a coil on the same cylinder is normally due to accidentally having battery voltage fed to it somehow... OR... something (rust, corrosion, whatever) interfering with its ground circuit.
If it were me, I would check first for incoming DC voltage, perhaps not the full 12v voltage but rather a portion of it.
