Evinrude 225 oceanpro 1998 v6 loss of power

All was good throughout the day then loss of power. Restarted engine and starter was knocking on fly wheel, while going slow to reach dock 100 yards away the battery cables circuit started to melt back to starter and solenoid. What was the cause for the engine to shut down while running? And how do i prevent this from happening again?

If starter drive hung up in flywheel then could have been bad starter, or starter drive, shorted solenoid, bad key switch or bad battery cables.

Changed all above except key switch . Now when I try to turn over it is getting power but won't crank . Is the fly wheel not lined up correct. Is their something broken inside. Or go back to key switch?
