  • 1996 Evinrude - High water pressure

    I've just bought a boat with a 1996 Evinrude 115 Looper.

My question is the water pressure seems high. Anything over 3000RPM, the water pressure is off the scale +30psi.
    - Compression is 130psi on all cyls and the motor runs nicely.
    - pee stream is good and water is warm but not hot
    - can hold hands on heads for about 2-3 secs before its too hot to touch
    - I checked the gauge with shop air at different pressures and it reads correctly
    - I checked thermostats in a pot of water on the stove and they both opened correctly

    Any suggestions??

Loopers had pressure control valves next to thermostats may be stuck.

your complaining about 30 psi plus as water pressure ha ha ha

do not complain that is very good to have.

your problem is that the pipe is probably going direct from engine to guage.
this is in fact the only true way of see what the pressure is, and the best way.

now most people buy a guage and fit a T -piece in the tell tale and then go from that to the guage.
using a t-piece will give a much lower reading and therefore only need a gauge that goes to 30 psi. this is the wrong way although 90% of water pressure gauges are set up this way, that is why most think 30+ is wrong !!!!.

i would buy a 60 psi gauge and be very happy with over 30 psi fitted directly to the engine with no tell tale to worry about..
anything under 20psi at 2000 rpm is a major problem.

has your engine got a T-piece fitted / if so just clean out the tell tale tube from t- piece to its end and also the t-piece.
but never complain of good water pressure.

        thanks for the replies,

My gauge is plumbed directly to the head.

I did find the problem. The previous owner fitted incorrect thermostat springs (from the ealrier model, which are much stiffer. it turns out that the spring that holds the thermostat in also make it act as a pressure relief valve.
If the engine is revved to hard while cold (thermostat shut), or at higher engine revs, the thermostat lifts from its seat and byp***es the water.....dropping pump pressure.

and what pressure is it at now at 3000 rpm ?

when you say earlier model had a stronger spring , who told you that ?
