  • 1974 6HP Oil Leaks

    Hello,

    I'm working on a 1974 6HP (6402C) motor...

I noticed a lot of oil mixed with water after test running draining out of the water intake on the lower unit...

Removed the lower unit only to see a lot of oil on top of the water pump housing...Could this be the gear case seals or shift shaft seals leaking gear lube out through the drive shaft or shift rod ? The prop shaft is dry.

I drained the gear lube and did see evidence of water in the oil..but,,not that much...

    Any help appreciated,

I have an older 6hp.I think mine calls for 16:1 oil ratio.I might be oil left from the exhaust. To much oil can cause that.

Well,,,it seems that the oil/fuel mix was too strong for the old gal...It should be 50:1 after 1964...So,,,I'm installing a new water pump impeller and trying it with proper oil/fuel mix..

As a side note,,,I had a Merc 50 hp just blow thick oil out of the exhaust and lower unit one time and it turned out to be a ruptured fuel pump..The fuel/oil mix was being sucked into the crank case at a alarming rate..

      Thanks for the response Elton
