1970 evinrude slipping into neutral from foward.

I have an 18 hp 1970 Evinrude that today starting giving me problems. The shift lever starts to chatter when in forward and then slips into neutral. The shear pin is fine but will not propel the boat forward. Any suggestions? Is there an adjustment to the shift rod that is needed to be made?

Sound like it is not fully inguaging, there are no adjustments. Be sure there is no play in the shifting components.
