I have a 1987 evinrude 140. Having a problem with reverse. When I pull control to reverse I get a grinding in the foot. If I pull back to full power I have reverse. I have checked cable and control box and all seem to be fine. I have found that when I shift to reverse the piston does not go back as far as when l pull down for full power, it goes back about a half inch more than when I just put in reverse. Very few shavings on bottom foot plug.

The control box controls the shifting distances. If it is not fully extending the cable into reverse until your in full throttle, then something is misadjusted or broken in the control box.
