  • Top end issues, 88 spl

I need advice to check my local mechnic. My 88hsp evinrude is not running correctly on the top end. Last year I replaced the coils and that seem to fix the issue. This year, first trip, same thing happening. The engine starts fine runs good but the last little bit of throttle is not their. I replace the water seperator and clean the screen on the fuel pump. I put a new fuel pump in last year as well. It seems as though its not getting fuel at the top end. linkage checked and looks OK. The mechanic is telling me to replace my prop. It did have some dings and bent on one blade, so I replaced it. Any advice. compression was checked a year ago as well as was good.

I would think timing or carb, has it ever run right? If you have a motor that is jetted for low elevation that could be a problem or float levels?

Thanks for the thoughts, yes the engine ran fine last year after replacing the coils. I will recheck timing but I have not gone through the carbs. I am at sea level, and motor has always been used mostly in sea water. Do you think exhaust clogging could cause top end issues?

Did you put in fresh gas this year? I think that I would put in a little Sea Foam and run it for a weekend before I tore it apart.
