I have an 85 hp 4 cylinder that has no spark. I was told that I can remove the coil and amplifier and replace it with an automotive coil. Connect the ignition power to the positive side and the points to the negitive side of the coil. Has anyone heard of doing this and does it work the same as original. With points ignition I can't see why it wouldn't

Since no one has replied to this post,,,,,let me begin. I have removed the amp and coil from my 71 85HP. I installed an automotive coil and also a ballast resistor. Amazing enough, I now have spark!

Can you please tell us how it is working? I have a 72 100hp with no spark. This sounds like it good be a viable work around, but does it work on the water?
