Help. I have an Evenrude 40 hp outboard, the engine would start and then cut out after a few seconds, I foolishly dismantled the fuel pump to inspect the diaphragm and naturaly the metal washer the nylon washer and the flap all fell off into the well, i have put the pump back together but on pressurising the fuel bulb petrol leaks from the twin carb air intakes, i have since rebuilt the carbs but the fuel still comes pouring out, would this be a fuel pump problem and what can i do to fix this. i understand that this pump may be a VRO pump both fuel and oil go into the pump.

Fuel coming out of air intake on carbs

The large hole at the rear of the carb where the air filter goes, i,m not that good with the technical words for these things, should the fuel get to the carbs just by pressurising the system, without starting the engine, i thought that the fuel would only go to the pump. thanks

Yes fuel will get to the carbs by pumping up the system on most engines. The only thing that I can think of is that the float on the carb is stuck or if it's like my old 9.8 the vent hole over the float bowl is plugged. Usually there is a small hole in the top of the float bowl that allows air out so that fuel can come in, if that hole is plugged it will cause gas to go out the jet instead of filling the float bowl and shutting off the needle valve. That is all I have hope that it helps.
