I'm hoping that some more knowledgeable people can help me with a few issues that I am having. I bought a 1981 Evinrude 15hp outboard back in December, and tried to run it for the first time this past weekend. Unfortunately, the motor has a few quirks....
1. The throttle control on the tiller arm is binding. It doesn't appear to be doing it at the tiller pivot point. Does anyone know if there is a common problem area that I should check?
2. The fuel pump might be shot. The engine runs for no more than 6 or 7 seconds and then cuts out like it ran out of gas. The fuel tank wasn't vapor locked, and the line seemed to be holding pressure. How can I go about testing the fuel pump?
3. There is a bit of a tapping noise coming from the crankcase. Not very loud, but easy to hear from 2 feet away. It's not consistent, but it does change frequency in direct relation to the engine RPM's when it is audible. Does this sound like I have a bearing getting ready to go? Are these engines known for problems with rod bearings, wrist bearings, or other internal components? How likely is it that the problem could be a result of a poorly firing cylinder? The plugs are old Champions, and were somewhat fouled when I pulled them out.
Thanks for any advice you guys can offer!
