First, I'm a newbie to this site. Hello from Central Ohio! Ok, I own a vintage 1978, 85hp, model #85899C. This motor cannot have more than 125hrs tops and is like showroom condition. I've had it in storage for over 15yrs+ and I've used marine storage oil in the cylinders, occasionally turning the prop by hand. This year I've taken great care to restore my b***boat, trailer and to be very careful getting my outboard ready for next season. I'm a decent mechanic but I've never had an outboard apart. I've already taken off the carbs and dunked them, removed the jets and after re-install I hung the rabbit ears on and it started and ran fairly decent immediately. I noted there was decent water circulation however I know I have to install a new impeller rebuild kit.
I don't have a service manual however I've searched the internet, including you tube and understand the basics of installing a new impeller. It does not look difficult however the initial steps of removing the lower unit is somewhat confusing. I get a general idea of the shift linkage having to be disconnected under the carbs but I get lost when reading about torque tab bolts and sacrificial anode bolt?.....I'm guessing the locations of such has to also be in the same general location under the carbs? I've yet to find a better illustration blow up to have the confidence to know I can get to these things without risking getting into situations that require specialized tools. Does anyone have a link or might easily explain how to wisely pursue taking this apart. The rest looks like a piece of cake with the exception of getting the shift linkage reattached properly. Thanks in advance! If the more wise approach is to buy a service manual, then so be it. Just trying to save 35 bucks.
