I purchased an impeller kit OEM for my 1995 70hp, the kit has an impeller with 6 vanes the impeller that was in the motor had 3 vanes does it matter, I spoke with the dealer and he looked it up and there were 3 years 94, 95 and 96 that used the 3 vanes, he was going to swap out the impeller for me but I already installed it as it was an OEM kit

I too have run into that scenario a few times.... 3 vanes vs 6 and have encountered both types in the same identical part numbered water pump kit.
I never questioned it and simply took it as a factory change and installed it. It worked out fine, no problems.

I do recall various (not all) water pumps having a "flat" rubber washer type "O" Ring that sat in a recessed groove in the underside of the top portion of the plastic housing... then the cup pressed up against it. That simply added a slight bit of pressure of the cup downward to seal against the impeller plate. It also prevented water pressure from flowing alongside, between, the cup and plastic housing to shoot up the driveshaft tube. However I never got a straight answer from any factory rep as to the actual purpose of it.
There were two other "O" Rings (varies) in kits.... One that went in a groove just under the top splines of the driveshaft to prevent the access of water to the splines (rust/frozen splines)... be sure to always grease those splines!
The other "O" Ring would apply to some (not all) impellers that have a groove machined in one side (from memory, I believe the bottom side) and the "O" Ring simply sat in that groove to create a perfect sealing effect.
Did the above answer your question?
