I have a 9.9 two stroke, and on this motor i had a similar problems.
the procedure is:
Lower unit has a shifting rod in 3 positions. Up is a forward gear, middle or center is neutral, and all the way down is a reverse. They are a half inch apart from one of other.
when u put a lower unit back i shift it on lower unit to neutral. The motor lever is in the first gear and the rod goes as far out or looking in middle section where lower unit conects to middle section is all way down.then i slide a lower units rod with that conector(coupler) and tighten the screw between two rods. Then i slide up the lower unit on place , and as the motor lever is in forward gear , and you can hear it click in first gear on lower unit. Then the 6 screws between lower unit and middle and all works well. After 5 times you get a hand to do it
It must click to forward —talking about lower unit.
Hope it helpsLast edited by sasko1980; 05-04-2017, 01:13 PM.
