  • 1977 85HP carbs leaking fuel

I can smell gas when my boat sits overnight in garage. Gas puddles in back wash well. Pulled cowling gas is below carbs. Tilt motor up and gas drips out of carbs. Is this a float seat issue?
Can a fuel pump deliver too much fuel causing the carbs to dump the excess?
    Thanks

In the tilt position, even carburetors in perfect condition will have the fuel within them leak out due simply to the extreme tilt angle they're in.

Also, in that extreme tilted position, should your engine be connected to a portable fuel tank... and that tank has been closed off (vent shut off), the tank will build up pressure and cause fuel to flow out of the carburetors due to the float angle (open/relaxed).

Sometimes, even though tilted at an extreme angle, if the carburetor face plate gaskets are in great condition or new and seated properly... and the hose at the rear port corner of the face plate is properly connected, the fuel will stay within that face plate a$$embly and be recirculated via that hose when the engine is running.

Hint: I used to simply lay a rag under the face plate cover a$$embly when the engine was not in use, even when NOT tilted.
