  • Evinrude 9.9 hiss

    Hi all, - the story.
    Evinrude 9.9 BALCRA 1984

I had to take powerhead apart due to clogged water p***ages.
I bought new gaskets, seals, exaust tube gasket ..etc

I re***embled the motor and it fires up nice. On first pull.

Today i noticed that when i turn flywheel by hand it has a little hiss, like air coming out somewhere. I found the problem. The spark wasnt too tight and the air was going out. Re-tightened all ok.
Now there is no hiss/air from spark but i can hear it from the exhaust.
I pulled the head from the middle section and on the bench, when I turn the flywheel it gets like hiss/air slowly from the exhaust.
    Is this normal or what???

P.s. new rings installed on both pistons

    Help!

You didn't trap a snake in there somewhere did you?

Seriously.... I never heard anything like a hiss with the thousands of engine I worked on, however it may have been there. I'd suspect that what you're hearing is the compression or crankcase pressure escaping through the end gap of the piston rings.

This motor starts fine and it works. So im puzzled about this snake inside:-)
This hiss or air escape comes when the flywheel is rotated with a hand slowly . I cant tell if its no1 or no 2 piston when it comes to top of cyl

I don't know what to tell you my friend. I have never encountered that hissing problem and I've worked on these things from 1960 to 1991 (retired). Since there isn't much activity here, I suggest you go to MarineEngine.com or iBoats.com with that question. Perhaps one of the members there has encountered that problem. (Joe)
