  • 1973 Fastwin 18hp key way question

    Hi,
New to this forum. Just picked up a 1973 Fastwin 18hp that hasn't been run in over 30 years. Did the usual, pulled and cleaned the carburetor, replaced the two coils, points looked pretty good, and changed lower unit oil. Fired her up and got her running. The problem is no water. So, I pulled the lower unit and checked the impeller which didn't look bad, but I noticed it didn't have much of a key way in the drive shaft. It was kind of like a little pin sticking out, maybe an 1/8 of an inch or less. It is enough to catch the impeller, but it seems awfully small, particularly where the impeller cutout is for the key way is much larger. I haven't tried pulling the pin out yet, looks like I may be able to get a pair of pliers on the head of it. I ***ume this pin comes out? Is it supposed to be this small? I am wondering if the impeller is slipping over the key way/pin and isn't spinning the way it is supposed to, thus causing no water to pump. Anyone with any experience on these? Also, it doesn't appear this unit uses a thermostat, because I didn't see any in the parts list, but it does look like it has a housing for it, just haven't opened it yet. Any info on this motor would be greatly appreciated, and thanks in advance.

Sitting for thirty years.... do yourself a favor and install a complete water pump a$$embly. It comes with a new drive pin.

Yes the pin comes out.. it just sits in there.

The 1973 18 hp Evinrude/Johnson is equipped with a thermostat... top of head, plate with 3 bolts.

Thank you for replying so quickly. I did order the replacement ***embly for the water system. When I get the new pin I will be able to tell if the old one broke a piece off, because I am really surprised how little it sticks out from the whole in the drive shaft. Also, when I look at the schematics for the engine I have, it doesn't display or list any thermostat. Would you happen to know a part number I could use. Really appreciate it.
