  • Random no oil warning with multiple engines.

I have a boat that originally had a 1992 40hp johnson outboard motor. Randomly it would throw a no oil warning buzzer and one squeeze of the oil bulb would make it stop. The warning buzzer would sound just randomly at any throttle setting. Never had a problem with the motor and I always just suspected the vro was weak or something.

Now I just rebuilt a 1992 60hp evinrude with new .020" over pistons, all new seals and gaskets and the whole deal. Pulled the 40hp off the boat and installed the 60 using the same oil tank and controls from the 40. Warning buzzer does the same exact thing with the new motor. I have pulled and checked the oil pickup from the tank and all seams good. I have been running mixed fuel per OMC break in procedure. If I don't prime the oil bulb the warning buzzer will stop after awhile on its own. Sometimes it will stop within one beep other times it takes a few minutes.

The 40 used oil out of the tank no problem and I suspect the 60 is using oil as well (seams like the oil level went down after a couple tanks of gas). The oil flows from the tank to the engine easily, I primed the bulb with the oil line off the motor.

The only thing I can think of that would cause this that I noticed is there isn't a hose clamp of any kind on the oil line where it attaches to the engine. There wasn't one on the 40 and I didn't put one on the 60 however my Dads 70 has a plastic hose clamp on the oil line. Could it be pulling in air bubbles at that connection causing the random warning?

If I can't figure it out what wire do I pull off the vro to terminate the no oil sensor?

So after much reading and research it seams as though this could be caused by a faulty timer base. I read that if the timer base pulses don't match the oil pump pulses you will get a oil warning. Come spring I will get a new timer base and try it out.
