1988 70 hp Evinrude. Hole in Lower Unit

Ok. Wondering if anyone has had an issue like this. I thought that I had hit something while leaving the dock but not sure. I heard. Large pop but thought hit something motor ran good across the lake, but when got back lifted motor and found a hole in the lower unit it was created by the gear rod I believe. Now won't stay running and turns over rough. I guess I don't know if this is something that hit the motor or some kind of explosion?? Any ideas. I'll try to post a pic.
