I have a 1974 50 hp evinrude model 50473m. I changed the water pump and in the process the shift rod accidentally got turned. I didn't think much of it but after I put the lower unit back on now I can't shift into forward. How do I readjust the shift rod to make it right? I read on another post you can measure the rod but I don't know what the length should be. Any help would be appreciated.

if it has electric start
short shaft 16 7/32 +/- 1/32 in
long shaft 21 7/32 +/- 1/32 in
if it has manual start
short shaft 16 23/32 +/- 1/32 in
long shaft 21 23/32 +/- 1/32 in
note: measured from gearcase to center of shift rod hole

Note that when adjusting that rod... it must be in the neutral position, measured from the top of the gear-case to the center of the shift rod hole.Comment
