1977 Evinrude 20 HP

Hello all,

I have a 1977 20 HP that has intermittent spark on both cylinders, outboards are new to me, any thoughts on what the issue might be would be appreciated. Also, anyone know where I might be able to get a manual online? The model # is 207B62.

Usually the place to search for a manual, or anything for that matter is on eBay.com .

The 1977 model should have solid state ignition... quite unusual to have intermittent spark. The spark, at cranking speed and with the spark plugs removed, should jump a 7/16" gap with a strong blue lightning like flame... a real SNAP!

If the above does not exist... check coils for cracking and shorting out to the ground, sensors under flywheel for cracks or melting down that would result in a voltage drop to the power-pack, all connections for tightness and/or corrosion.

As a prior technician, I always had a spare power-pack on hand as a test unit to plug in for a quick check of that component (saves a hellava lot of time!). It's a good idea to have a spare pack on hand anyhow and the tools to change it as one never knows when it will fail... usually in the middle of a fishing trip or when a storm is coming in.
