rev limiter question

I have e90 it run great fo about a mile then sounds like it hits a rev limiter can shut down for a few min then run fine for a bit What causes the rev limiter to kick in?? OK I answered my own question

You don't say what year that 90hp is but I a$$ume it has the overheat feature (S.L.O.W.) of knocking out one bank when the engine starts to overheat to drop the rpms to approximately 2500 rpm in order to prevent damaging the engine.

I'd suggest you check the water pump a$$embly and thermostats.
