  • Tilt/Run Lever

My 1989 Evinrude 48hp starts easily and runs great. The problem is that the tilt/trim lever won't hold the motor in any position. I can manually lock it upright for trailering, but when lowered into water it flops up & down depending on speed. In reverse it nearly lifts itself out of the water. My professional mechanic is reluctant to replace the necessary parts, saying it would cost more than the motor is worth. Is there some sort of shortcut, easy fix? Any way to convert it to electric tilt/trim to save my back? Is it really only suitable for trade-in or recycling?

I might be inclined to take it to a Johnson/ evinrude shop and ask them what it would cost to repair the tilt/trim on your motor? Worst case, you would know if too expensive to repair.

    Good luck.

      Tilt/Run Lever

The owner/mechanic quoted me a price of "about $1500.oo" and is reluctant to do it. He said converting it to electric tilt would cost alot more. Supposedly, a new 50 horse outboard would cost about $5,000. The boat is a 15' Sunbird.

Then the only option is maybe, try and google a trim/tilt clamp ***y unit for your motor. Someone might be selling parts off a similar motor to yours, and may only charge a small amount, compared to new?

        Good luck.
