  • 88 HP Evinrude

My motor starts up ok but does not have any power while under way. It will not die out when I give it gas but it has no speed. It will rev up in neutral but I won't push it. i changed the gas line and went to 5/16 from 3/8 and was told it didn't matter. I've cleaned the carburetors and changed the plugs and wires. Does anyone have any solutions that I might try?

Check compression on all cylinders first? Before all the other checks/tests.

Post back when able with what you find.

88 evinrude only two cylinder working.

Checked the compreession and had about 120lb in every cylinder. Took te boat for a ride and pulled the plugs. The two on the left side were dry and probaly firing. The two on the right were wet with gas and most likely were not firing. Could it be both coils are bad or it there a switch that controls that side. Is there a way to check if that is the problem

I'm not sure what year motor you have, or if you have a neutral safety switch, they have been known to cause these issues.

If you have a clip on style timing light, put motor on muffs, and see if strobe light does/doesn't come on for each plug wire. If no strobe light for both cylinders on one side, swap one opposing cylinder coil with other side, and run test again. If coil works on the good side, but not the side with no spark, then coils are probably good. There is something else preventing those cylinders from firing (possibly one coil in stator/ or timing coil, unless you have a sensor that interrupts the signal for that one side, keeping motor in limp mode?)?

May be the moderator (boats.net) can help you with this?

        Good luck.

I believe the motor is 96 by the model# e88tsled If there is a neutral safety can it be disconnected or should it be replace?. I think there is a safety to prevent it starting in forward, which often doesn't work.

Then you're saying it will start in forward?
If it starts in forward gear, then probably the neutral safety switch is bad, or not adjusted correctly?

If it is bad, it should be replaced. It is a safety switch for a reason, and needs to work properly.

Let us know what you find. Good luck.

The problem turned out to be the power pack. I replaced it and the motor now runs at full power.
