  • 1977 Evinrude 85HP Spark Issues - Please Help!

Hey yall. This is my first post to this fourm and im happy to be here . But Im having an issue with my boat. A little about my self, Im 21 years old. I worked 2 shifts in over time to save up for a boat. Im very mechanical savy and know my way around motors. Now to my boat. Its a 1977 85HP Evinrude. Ive lost spark on one bank. It has the single powerpack and it was under warranty and they replaced it and its still the same problem. So the only thing that can be left is the stator or the timer base correct? Ive pulled the flywheel and took pictures of them and ill post a link to the pictures at the end of this. So my question is 1. Based on the pictures does everything look okay. And 2. How can I diagnosis which one it is with a basic multi meter, no dva. Ive worked hard for this and on this boat and its depressing to see her sit after all that work. Thank yall so much in andvance for any and all help!

From looking at the pictures, there looks like there is an issue with the bearing/seal at the top of the engine. I thought in might just be the camera angle but it looks offset in a couple of pictures.

If lost power on one bank, look for the neutral safety switch, it may be interrupting pee to one bank, if it thinks it's still in neutral? Should be mounted around shift linkage. Try byp***ing the switch to see if it's causing your problem?

      Good luck.

Update. I switched both coils from one side to the other and still the same problem. I took the black/yellow wire off to see if it was the switch and still the same thing. Im leaning to stator cause the timer base wires look new and the stator looks like the original. Does anyone own the book and can tell me how to test the stator? Its too dang hot to be in this garage when I could be on the water getting my fish on
