  • 1995 evinrude ocean runner help!

Hello, thanks for reading. I have a 1995 evinrude ocean runner which has been a great motor until recently. It all started when i replaced my cranking battery and accidently hooked it up backwards. Afterwards there was no spark on the starboard cylinder bank. I replaced the power pack with a used one I found and that didn't fix it. I replaced the stator which was burned up and the rectifier. still wouldn't run right until i put my old power pack back on. This combination fixed the problem and the motor ran great for two fishing trips until the end of the second trip when after running great all day, I tried to start and it would simply sputter and die every time i turned the key. Today at home while trying to figure out what happened I pulled the 5 pin connection on the port side of the power pack and it started and idled fine on all cylinders although it was a little rough. I then noticed smoke start to come out of the power pack where the plug was disconnected. I looked inside and the bottom of the plug where the 5 pins are was glowing orange. Upon checking the female plug end there were signs of the plastic melting. I ***ume the power pack has shorted out and this is what caused the problem i had on the water. My question is what could have caused this? was this just a coincidence or does it have something to do with a larger problem with my ignition system? please help! thanks

Id say connecting your battery wrong started this whole problem. Now you may have to replace sections of wiring, power pack, rectifier/ regulator, stator, starter, solenoids, tilt system, and anything else possibly affected before reconnecting battery (hopefully correctly).

You might want to do continuity tests on all the remaining wires, and test components by the service manual, to make sure the components aren't shorted out?

    Good luck.
