  • 1996 200 HP ocean pro running rich

Hello to all 1st post here I have a 1996 200 HP ocean pro and burned a piston a while back found the cause and rebuilt entire engine bored .020 over with weisco pistons all new bearings and the works .
I am breaking engine in now runs great but it is running super rich on the carbs I also rebuilt all the carbs . I can tell its rich because at partial throttle it feels like its bogging and pulled the plugs out and they are almost black . it looks like I may have to jet it down because the only thing I can think is going on I gave engine more displacement and now it is sucking more fuel . this theory works with motorcycles I work on a 1000cc engine with the same size carbs as a 750 uses smaller jets. anyone have any suggestions ideas
    Thanks for your replies

I think I would open air mix screws slightly (all should be identical settings), clean plugs, and let idle for an hour in a tank,or on muffs. Your break in period shouldn't exceed 3k - 3.5k for at least a good twelve hours to let rings wear in. you should also be adding some extra oil for this break in time. Your plugs should be showing a rich oily burn. Twenty thousandths over is not a large difference, I went thirty over on one motor (115 Johnson) and still didn't have to re-jet carb jets. It ran perfectly fine with original jets.

If you have over revved motor during this beak in period, you may have damage the rings -can check with compression test.

These outboards are not high rpm motors like many motor cycles. high RPMs on outboards (2 strokes) are usually 5500 RPMs. Some of the newer motors may go to 6k, but the older ones weren't built for it.

When your motor is broke in, if exceeding 5500, you should re-prop to keep it down.

    Good luck.

Thanks Solarman i have not gone over 3000 rpms since rebuild the specs on this engine are 5500 rpm max . i mixed the fuel in the tank at 50 to 1 along with the vro so i guess it will be running oil rich plugs just looked fuel washed . i just looked in the manual and it says the lows speed needles are 5 turns for a 96i had them at 2.5 for a 95 read wrong column i will reset and start engine and let run for a while. that may well be my problem also checked compression its fine all cylinders.

      thanks again
