Hello, I have a 1978 Evinrude 85HP V4 with @ 1,000 freshwater hours on it. Also, it has new BRP controls. Engine starts and runs great. However, it will set off the alarm sporadically, and it stays on, so telling me there is an overheating issue. It happens sometimes at startup, some times after running a few minutes, sometimes at full throttle. Same deal, no improvement after I changed the thermostats and water hoses. Engine pumps good water through the pisser as well as the exhaust, the pisser water is always cool and the exhaust water is warm, not hot. Also, the heads are not hot to the touch. Any helpful ideas from you folks would be great. Thank you and enjoy your summer.

Also, it might be worth investing in a laser temp gun (~$15 at harbor freight), aim at different areas around cylinders to see if you may have corrosion issues internally (may require a chemical flush - salt away, or vinegar- to clear some cooling p***ages?), but fresh water is less likely? Although, it sounds like a sensor, or wires could be a problem?
Good luck.post back what you find.
