Guys, I have a 1993 140hp that apparently yesterday was the first time it had a new water pump installed in it. After a little problem with getting the lower unit out I discovered that the impeller was almost torn in 2 pieces. I ended up having to cut the old impeller off because of the rust. No damage was done to the shaft thankfully. I installed the new pump and tried unsuccessfully to reinstall the lower end back in place. Something seems to be hitting. The shift rod has a bend in it which was facing to the front of the engine when it came out. Is that the correct position or did it turn as it came out? The top of the shaft is flat, but the splines are tapered though. I am thinking the 1/8" flat edge on the shaft may be what is holding me up from getting it to go all the way up and in. My brother and I made several attempts in getting it back in. I am thinking of filing the edge of the shaft to eliminate the flat edge. It looks easy in the video's to reinstall the shaft. Something is off just a bit. Does anyone have any advice besides taking it to a mechanic?

Thanks Solarman. I did have it in reverse when I started. We had a little problem when pulling it down something was stuck and it took an extra jerk to force it apart, and I did not think about the fact it could have caused the rod to shift to neutral or even forward. I am ***uming reverse will be all the way down and forward up. I am going to check that out today to see if that is the problem.
