  • 1976 15hp, need to drop the lower unit.

I have a model 15604a and need to replace the water cooling propeller. I've taken out the six bolts but the lower unit does'nt come off. What am I missing to get this unit to come off?

Did you figure it out? Did you disconnect the shift linkage?

Yes I did figure it out. I disconnected the linkage under the carb and dropped it out that way. Then discovered the connector at the junction of the lower end. Next time I'll use the connector at the junction.

By the way, what wieght oil should I use in the lower end drive unit?
Also what gas ratio do I use with this motor? Thank you for all your help!

Disregard the question above, already answered my own questions on the gear oil and the gas ratio.
The original thread was started so I could replace the water cooling propellar, after dis***embling the lower unit -the cooling system seems to be intact and in good working order. My question is where does the water exit the cooling system on this motor? I just purchased this motor and was told the cooling system was not working.

              I have a 78, 81 and 84.
Water exits from the 2 rows of 3 holes on both sides of the lower unit just above the cavitation plate. Do you know about the tell tail indicator stream that is located lower back of the starboard side of the power head. FYI, just because water isn't coming out the tell tail doesn't mean the pump isn't working. But if water is coming out it does mean the pump is working. The tell tail could be plugged and the motor could be operating correctly. Also I've read that the thermostat usually stick open, but the thermostat could also be a problem.

Sratch the part about the tell tail indicator. From what I can see the 76 doesn't have it.
I believe the water exits in the same place, but I also don't see and exit water tube on the 76???

                  Thank you for your response!

Could you clarify what exactly is the tell tail indicator and the power head?
