  • 140 hp v4 1985? carb issues

Just got this, was sitting for two years, ran fine with old gas (mixed). Installed new remote tank, cleaned carbs with denatured alcohol. Still starts and runs good until I shift into gear, will run slow, but when I open it up, it dogs down, and eventually quits. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

If you cleaned it well, then I might check the timing advance linkage, to make certain it's connected properly. Otherwise, you may still have carb issues that need to be soaked and compressed air blown through pas-sages?

    Good luck.

I'm a little concerned about the use of denatured alcohol on some parts. If there are o-rings and seals that are affected by it, it "might" damage those parts and cause a bigger problem

          What would you recommend then?

I've been a fan of 70% Isopropyl Alcohol. You can still use the other but make sure it doesn't screw-up any rubber parts and gaskets.

I have the same motor with the same problem that has had me puzzled for the past couple of years.

When it dies after opening throttle, I can easily restart it. Most of the time, then, I can just take off and go with no problems. But, if I throttle down to idle and then try to take off again, it may run fine...........Or it may die. Usually happens over 1500 RPM.

Anyone with any further suggestions? Carbs have been gone through twice and problem still exists!

Have you checked compression and spark? Also you might want to change spark plugs (Champion QL77J4) These motors like Champions do not sub with other brands.
