  • Internal oil leak bottom end ?

After hitting a rock with my older 9.9 evinrude , there is now dirty grey oil coming out of a small port on the bottom end below the prop. Is it possible to have a crack internally on the lower end gear case?

You may have to remove prop and clean to see if you can tell where oil is leaking. Unless it is a 2 stroke and exhaust is venting through prop? Then maybe the oil you see is used/burnt 2 stroke oil? I doubt if you damaged any internal part that caused the leak. Usually any crack would be at the point of impact. Did you hit the rock with the gear case, or did it hit hard near prop (should have damaged prop at same time)?

Post back if you can tell anything.

      Bottom End Gearcase Leaking Oil.

Hi Solarman: thanks for the reply,I did hit the skag and gearcase and not the prop. It is a 2 stroke and the oil is definitely a grey mix of oil and water spewing from the vent hole at the bottom of the skag and gearcase. not the exhaust black oil. It has the look of water that gets in your gearcase when you change the bottom end oil. I've never seen this before. I guess I will have to strip the bottom end to find out what is going on. I was hoping it might be the water pump seal popped out of the fit or something else......tks.

If you can find a small hand pump, put a few pounds of pressure in the top oil plug hole, one you have the unit off the motor. This may show you where your leak is. Yes, it's a good idea to have water pump off when done, then with a little pressure check drive shaft seal, shift rod seal, and prop seal. Then anywhere else you see oil.

Also, anything above the oil plug, may only leak air.

        Good luck.

Hi Solarman: Thanks for the advice: I pressurized the lower end of the outboard and confirmed that the drive shaft seal was fine. It turns out the shift rod seal had popped up almost an 1/8 of an inch and was leaking oil. Tapped it back down and everything seems to be fine. runs well...... tks. rockerroxy.

Glad you could find the leak. I'm wondering how that seal popped up? Maybe not put in well enough originally, is my guess?

If it does the same thing again, you should probably put a new one in.

            Good luck, happy boating.
