  • Rectifier/Regulator Recommendation

Hi everyone. I have a 1991 E150GLEI with a bad module. Tach and charge doesn't work then it might work, then it doesn't again. When it does work the charge voltage goes up to 17/18VDC. All connection are tight and clean. Unit is grounded to the motor properly.

This is a replacement for a unit that was acting up with the tach back in 2011. I had read that when they start to act up, replace because it "might" fail causing an electrical fire. Okay, ordered a unit from CDI Electronics, because rumor was they were the best, and installed it. Worked perfectly! That was in 2011. Forward to 2013, in the late summer I started to lose the tach and charge. Check connection and all were good. Vacation time was done and pulled the boat out for the year. Never had it in the water in 2014, no vacation time. I would think that the unit doesn't even have 30 hours runtime on it. Retired now and ready to hit the water but having the above mentioned problem. I've been emailing the support person at CDI and getting nowhere. Now they don't even answer my emails.

Not very happy with that company and it looks like I'm going to have to shell out another $220+ for a new unit. I'm not going to buy a CDI unit. What would be a good brand that you've had good luck with that you would recommend. (Sitting here looking at the boat sitting in the driveway for the last month.) The part number is 193-4093

You might try posting your original part number with item name on google. See if any variations pop up?

That might be your best chance.

    Good luck.

      Cdi

I am skeptical of aftermarket parts.... I had an issue with Malory fuel pumps that drove me crazy. .. (after all !! my problem 3 weeks later could not be the brand new fuel pumps I just installed !!! WRONG !!!! )

I would call or contact CDI and let them know about the pre-mature failure of their product..... if they are not responsive I would strongly consider a used OEM part over a new aftermarket.

Well, I gave up on trying to get anywhere with CDI. They basically told me to go and buy a new one. I did, but it wasn't their product. Bought an Evinrude #0584093. No more after-market stuff for me.

Just an update. Installed a Evinrude unit and the motor runs great and the charging voltage is where it should be. Tach reading is good also. Problem solved, AMEN!
