  • 71 Johnson carb adjustment

I have a 1971 50hp Johnson. I rebuilt the carbs and changed water pump and t state. Set adjusting screws 1 1/2 turn out to start with. Motor runs but idles poorly. Tried adjusting screws to where it smooths out ( in and out of water ) but just can't get it to idle smoothly to the point where it won't die out. Most of my adjustments were made on water in gear but got tired of tryin to get back to shore with a engine that stops running. Is there something else I can do before I go back out on the water to set the idle so it won't die out on me?

Set the mixture screws by book, the same. If set same, by book, and motor still not idling, something still not right. Idle stop screw adjustment, timing not right, plugs, or wires bad, or carb low speed p***ages still not clean, or fuel pump? Vro pump? Many things can affect idle and running. If don't have a manual, wise to get one.

Good luck, post back if find anything.

This is what I found. Lower carb idle screw port plug feel out for some reason so it was sucking air. After I fixed that I inspected all fuel lines. Found 1 line that was cracked. Replaced all lines. Remove fuel pump and inspect for any holes. Fuel pump was good. Primed fuel system and still ran poorly with adjustments 1 1/2 turns out. Come to find out the screws should have been set to 5/8 turn out. Set at 3/4 turn out to start. Final adjustment was about 5/8 turn out. Now all ideals good. Installed new plugs now just waiting for better weather to take boat out on water and see how it goes. Thanks for all the help.

Glad to hear. Just keep all air mix screws same setting for all carbs. Manufacturers set motors up that way, once set, leave them alone. If after a day of running the motor, the plugs are showing cylinders too, rich or lean, adjust all carb air mix screws identically 1/16th turn each (out if too rich, in if too lean). Remember, the air mix screws are only used on motors when idling, they do not do anything when running medium or high rpms.

        Good luck.
