    Hello,
New to the forum and boat ownership. Although I have been around boats my whole life this is my first large outboard boat.

I recently purchased and '94 Evinrude 120. I took it to a local authorized mechanic to an inspection prior to taking my family out. I am mechanically inclined, but prefer to get an expert opinion esp. when the family and water is involved.

Mechanic said if I would have run the enging I could have destroyed it due to improper plugs and a bad power pack. Said the plugs were too long and would have destroyed the pistons (yet had no obvious damage at this time). Also stated that engine was only running on one cylinder.

Does not sound or look that rough to me. Also would it start and run if the pack was bad? How would there be no damage to plugs if they wer 1/2 to 1in too long? AM I GETTING TAKEN? SHOULD I GET A 2ND OPINION?

I had a power pack go out in my 175 evinrude the first symptoms were cutting out at full speed. It would run fine on hose but on the lake at full speed it would cut out. Then it would not only cut out but it would die at full speed. It would start back up in the beginning but as my power pack got worse it would get harder and harder to start back up. Sometimes it would start, but sometimes it wouldn't. the times it wouldn't start back up I checked engine for spark and had none. I changed power pack and good as new. Power packs are pretty expensive if you have no symptoms of a bad power pack I don't think I would replace it. maybe second opinion.

as far as plugs go that's easy go to top of page and hit purchase evinrude parts, then type in the year of your boat, horse power and model number, then go to cylinders & crankcases. You will find the right plug there with part number buy one for 4 dollars and compare it to what you have. Any auto part store should be able to cross reference the part number

Good call, purchasing a set of plugs is not a bad idea. But if motor has been running, and plugs are in good shape, not damaged by pistons yet? I think that says something? But comparing to what the book calls for might tell if previous owner didn't know what he was doing as well. Buy a set, compare, and save for another year if not different. Videos show motor running, but I can't tell if on all cylinders from it.

        Good luck.

Thanks for all the feedback! Previous owner replaced plugs in 2014 with the same ones that were in there. Although these were the wrong plugs (according to the mechanic) the previous owner stayed he never saw any damage on any plugs.

I think the power pack got fried by previous owner hooking up New battery incorrectly. During the sale he mentioned running a red wire from the engine directly to the battery.

Several good referrals about this mechanic so I am thinking about letting him do the work.

Just worried about potential damage caused by improper plugs. Is there any symptoms/examination techniques that would indicate damaged pistons? Just don't wanna throw good $ on bad!

          Compressing checks good!

          Thanks again!

            Compression is good?

Must be even in both cylinders (max 10-15psi difference)and should be above 100psi each. If this is so then your engine will be just fine. They don't make a plug so long it will contact the piston. That's nonsense. -B

***. That was my biggest concern! He specifically stated that there were 4stroke plugs in the engine instead of 2stroke plugs and that running the engine could have caused catostropic falure due to pistons contacting the bottom of the plugs.

If this is not ture/possible I am wondering if he is telling me the truth abou the power pack being bad! Seems to run pretty good on the videos in the original post dosent it?

              Thanks for input.

It might sound silly, but remove all your plugs so you can turn the engine over by hand until you can see the top of one of the pistons at the top of its stroke. Use a plastic soda straw to measure the depth and compare that to the depth of the spark plug

Ok so I got the boat back from the mechanic and the previous plugs wer NGK ZFR6F replaced with QL78YC. I now have the old plugs and power pack in my possession.

I will be lake testing the boat Friday./

So far happy with the repair except for the fact that my battery was perfect when I dropped off but completely dead when I picked up. Once charged I found the boat radio was left on. Shocking they had to listen to my radio while making repairs and how the hell do you park it in the yard with it still on?

Thanks for all the help. Will post how the lake test goes.

                    Sound good

From the video it seems to be running great just my opinion though
