1988 70 evinrude

Ihave a 1970 Evinrude that will not take off in the water but seems to run fine with the muffs on . I rebuilt the carbs and bought a new power pack which has not helped, now it is getting frustrating. Help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you checked compression and spark? Those engines will run great on 2 cylinders under a no load condition (on muffs), and it wount run worth a darn under load.

Yes I have 90 lbs of compression on all three cylinders.I cleanedout the fuel tank completely and lines making sure it got fresh gas

Yes I have spark. I also have installed a new power pack. Rebuilt the carbs again after being suggested to again. Changed fuel tank and all fuel lines. I do still however still have the old vro fuel pump, which have been blocked off for years and the engine has always performed great. This engine has drove me nuts. I am a car mechanic, but this boat has beat me.

your problem is compression. 90 lbs. is too low to run correctly. that is bottom line. most engines will run on the hose but will not run in the lake. it needs to be rebuilt or replaced. typically, it takes better than 100lbs. to idle or perform right.
