Can someone help me to understand the significance of the shims that are used on the drive shaft? There are two used on my shaft (burred and need to be replaced) and I am also unsure that it is even correct as the previous owner didn't do repairs by the book, I can't measure them without a digital, highly critical measuring tool that would cost more than the rebuild to buy. When on boats.net there are 5 sizes available to purchase ranging between .003" to .009".
It seems to me that some part of the re***embly is critical to be perfectly aligned.
