Controls 1988 28hp vs. 1988 50hp

I bought a 1988 50hp Evinrude to replace my 1988 28hp (28 Special) Evinrude. I did not get the controls for the 50hp. My 28hp has the throttle cable on the outside (left side) of the motor housing. The 50hp's throttle cable goes inside the right side of the motor housing. The 28hp shift cable is outside the motor housing and the 50hp shift cable is on the inside of the motor housing, both on the right side.

Can the shift and throttle cables from my 28hp controls be made to work on the 50hp motor? Or, will I have to buy a new set of cables? Does anyone know the answers to my questions?
