  • Water Pump Kit Installation

I have purchased a water pump kit for my 1980 Evinrude 115TLCS and have attempted dropping the lower unit, but have been stumped by the shift rod. If I could detatch it at the top (under and back from the lower carb) I don't see how I could re-attach it. Does the intake manifold have to be removed? Or something else? Possibly undo the "motor cover" (the bowl thar the engine sets in) to provide working room?

Spoke with a local outboard mechanic today who said the shift rod did not need to be disconnected. Anyone know?

I dont know what you have but on my 71 18hp there is a plate on the exhaust housing it has 2 screws and the shift rod splits there and you loosen the botom screw and it slides apart with the geer case

      Shift Lever

My 1975 70 hp Evinrude does not have that plate on the side of the housing. I ***ume my shift lever would have to be disconnected under the carb. I figure maybe I could drop a string from the top, connect to the lever and guide it by pulling on the string. I have not yet had to deal with this as I have thus far been unable to get the lower unit to separate. I am afraid to force it. Good luck
