I have acquired a 1963 Gale 15 hp , which is the first outboard I've ever had, it has two huge ignition coils, and I have no idea how the ignition on these works.

Is there a magneto on the motor ?

Does it only run connected to a battery ?

    1963 Gale ignition

I have a 1958 12hp Gale so I'll try to help. you will not need a battery to run your motor. pretty basic. there are 2 coils, one for each plug. 2 sets of ignition point under the flywheel....one for each cylinder. if you don't have spark when pulling the motor over, check the points for corrosion of dirt and dust on the points. make sure they are gapped correctly. take a match book cover and wipe between the points to clean them. check for broken wires to the coils, and then test your coils(there are a few videos on Youtube showing how to do this easily). make sure your flywheel has magnetism. pretty basic ignition system like a pre magnetron lawn mower engine
