Fuel pump put together wrong

I have a 1980 7.5 and I was wondering what would happen if you put the fuel pump back together wrong. My symptoms are it will only go full throttle at certain times and more than 90% of the ime if won't get up to speed. I took the fuel pump apart and was wondering what the symptoms would be if put back together wrong. Thanks

If fuel pump failed to pump engine would run until run out of gas and shut off.
