Finally got the 1991 Evinrude model VE25ELEID on the water with son Jonboy today. After two fried impellers working on the driveway with a large tank, got the carb cleaned by old geezer who struggled with getting to one nut inaccessible due to starter ***embly but got it cleaned. Cranked right up, my third impeller did its job, and we cruised out to the James River. Warmed the old gal up and opened her up. To our delight, we were skipping along the Powhatan creek for several miles when all of a sudden, she hesitated, then stalled. Pumped ball back up, started right up, and we continued on our way. Happened several more times over two hours. Help me out here...I removed the tank vent to eliminate that potential problem. Had previously replaced ball and fittings at both ends of the fuel delivery line. Installed an inline fuel filter due to previous crud in tank that I also replaced. The "geezer" said to install the ball vertically to make the check valve work, so did that. It helped, but did not eliminate the problem. Need help here...shouldn't the fuel delivery lines be free of vacuum leaks? Should I replace entire fuel line system and see what happens??? I noticed some air in the fuel filter, could that be the problem?

Pull pickup out of fuel tank see if in good shape, check anti-siphon valve in pickup, check fuel hoses, replace if needed.

Fuel tank is new, 6 gallon plastic job. Not sure I can remove the pickup to check it, since it was factory threaded into tank. Replaced entire delivery system from connection to connection yesterday with Evinrude OEM. Will see if problem persists. Noticed that idle speed varied considerably also. Can weak diaphragm in fuel pump be problem?

What a ride! Until fuel starvation
Motor performed worse despite new fuel connectors, hoses, and ball. Noted that they are actually looser than aftermarket ones, leaked a little at motor connection. Ran okay at half throttle, but after about a half minute at full throttle, would surge and eventually die. Started right back up each time. Decided to put o-ring on each connector for tight fit, will change out fuel pump unless someone gives me other advice. When connector is removed from motor and opened, ball squirts plenty of gas out, so doubt the tank pickup is restricted, but can't actually take a look at it. Other ideas?

May be a bad fuel pump but all leaks will need to be repaired.
