  • 60 hp electric shift slow into forward gear!

I have an early 70's 60 hp electric shift outboard. It runs great, but I having been having issues with it. When I select neutral it goes right into neutral instantly, also reverse is instant, but when I put it in forward it sometimes won't engage for several minutes. I have put muffs on it and watched it. The prop will not move for anywhere from 8 seconds to 3 minutes then it engages and takes right off. I have tried running Dexron through it hopes it just needed cleaned and put in a magnet to catch shavings. Also use the type c lower unit oil. Any suggestions would be great!

Solenoid may be bad, but they are no longer available.

I have ran ohms through the 2 wires and they both test good. How can you tell for sure if it's a selonoide?

Would have to take gearcase apart, check linkage and shifter is working ok, then bench test solenoid to see if moves plunger as soon as power up.

Everything in the gear case works good. Could it be the switch on the controls is going bad?

yes it could be the control box simple attach a pair of wires and do a direct link to see if that helps.
