stuck in gear

Ok here we go I have a 1967 80 horse power on a 71 gl***master trihull I got her running and tuned.i changed gear oil and ive taken it out a handful of times run fine. Til today on way back to landing realized it was stuck in fwd I unhooked shift cable and realized it was stuck in gear at motor not in shift cable. It would start in drive. Any ideas were to start. Ive only owned or still own two motors only evinrude never had this problem so any advice will help thanks

Check gearcase oil for water or metal in oil, may have damage inside gearcase.

Yeah sorry should've posted that I did check it and looked ok to me. thanks

Drop lower unit and see if can shift it at gearcase.
