Back in 1977, I purchased a Tachometer for my 1966 60HP Evinrude Outboard Motor. It worked Great for 30+ years. A couple years ago this motor burnt up and has been replaced with a 1975 85HP Evinrude Outboard.
Can I use this Tach for the '75 85HP Motor? The '66 60HP Motor had a Magneto with a single coil and this is where the Tach connected -- to the Coil. The '75 85HP Motor has a Gray wire in the Remote Control and, per wiring diagram, connects to the Rectifier, picking up Tach signal via the alternator. I HAVE NO RECTIFIER -- place exists for it but, it's not there (obviously, I don't have an Alternator----have the Yellow and Yellow/Gray wires from Stator but, they do not connect to anything). The '75 85HP Motor uses 4 individual Coils - one for each cylinder. Can I connect this Old Tach to one of the Coils? Tach has 4 Poles on back ---- 'C' - '2' - '3' - '4'. There is currently a jumper wire from Pole 'C' to Pole '2'. If I can connect to one of the Coils, which Poles on back of Tach should be connected?
If I got a Rectifier, could I use this Gray wire in the remote (of course, after connecting to rectifier) and would the Tach I have work? If so, which Poles on back of Tach should be connected.
I purchased this 1966 Duracraft Boat, 1966 60HP Evinrude with a 1966 Dilly Trailer in 1977 for $900. I have certainly got my moneys worth out of it. Am currently restoring entire Boat again (restored it in 1988 and again in 1997).
Thanks for any Help.....................
