I recently purchased a 1972 Galaxy Comet 550 equipped with an original 1972 65hp Triumph with a Selectric gear box.
The background on this boat is as such: I purchased it for fishing in the ICW at Wrightsville Beach, NC and surrounding areas, but mostly for lake fishing. The motor fires right up, but has lower unit issues. The previous owner took the lower unit off of it to have it worked on, but never got around to it. I've got a second matching lower unit, and one from a 55hp. Both of the 65hp units make grinding noises when I turn the input shaft. However, the 55hp one is smooth.
My questions are...
1) Are these unit rebuildable?
2) Will the 55hp mate up the motor as is?
3) Is there anything random I need to know about this motor?
