I have a 1987 Evinrude 140, e140txcua. Bought it a few weeks ago. It had been sitting for 2 years. When I first ran it, there was a lot of hesitation like starving for fuel.
To make a long story short I'll list the things I have done so far.
I emptied both fuel cells, cleaned and added fresh fuel.
Replaced fuel lines, fuel filters, fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator, spark plugs, rebuilt carburetors.
A little on the fuel pump: previous owner removed VRO ***y and installed an electric fuel pump. I replaced the fuel pump with a marine fuel pump and added a regulator and gauge. Pressure is set to 5 p.s.i.
A little about me. I worked at car dealership from 1980 to 2001 as a technician specializing in drivability and emissions. I was certified as a master tech. I have some background in diagnosing but I am no outboard, 2 cycle mechanic, but I'm learning.
My problem now is motor bogs down at mid-range when accelerating slow. Idle is good. Top end is good. If you accelerate fast it runs fine. When it bogs down it is just like it runs out of gas. If you go from idle to full throttle it jumps up on plane and runs fine, no hesitation. I've checked and rechecked the jets to make sure they are clean. Actually went through carbs twice.
I've tried pushing in on key to choke carbs when it bogs down but no difference. Part of being a good mechanic is knowing when to stop and seek counsel from more experienced mechanics, so that's where I am now.
Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Joe
