Hello. I have a 1993 Evinrude 15" lower unit with metal chips in oil and a good 20" lower unit (93). Haven't spotted a 15" lower unit for sale so I am considering swapping driveshafts and shift shafts to get the 15" motor going again. How far do I have to go to swap driveshafts? I'm familiar enough....remove waterpump and all below it, pull main bearing carrier, undo pinion nut and swap? Am I gonna have to replace seals for sure? Am I gonna mess up the shimming? What are some of the pitfalls I should be aware of? Thanks in advance for any insight. I have done 'bout all there is to do to an outboard rebuild block and gearcase. I have taken them apart, but never to be put back together!

Will have to remove prop shaft bearing carrier, to get drive shaft out, shims shouldn't have to be changed, probably best to replace seals and orings.

Thanks. Was hoping to not mess with shims as I have know real knowledge of them. I remember the pinion nut as 7/8", any problems getting in there with a regular wrench or should I add the OMC tool to my arsenal? I think I may go for it....will post my successes and failures!

Should be able to get pinon nut with a wrench or socket.
