Help in servicing water pump on 95 112spl

I am attempting to replace the water pump on my 95 112spl. I have disconnected the shift lever, removed the 5 bolts and have partially disengaged the gearcase. I can only get it to drop down @ 1" and it will not move any further. I verified that the shift rod is disengaged and there are no other bolts holding the case in place. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

after enlisting the help from a former brown-water navy repairman, he found that the shift rod was not fully detached and prevented the case from falling out.
