I have a 1976 evinrude 85 hp with a bad power trim motor ,this trim is the one with the lift cylinders on the outside of the stern brackets,i would like to up grade to newer power trim dose anyone know if this can be done if so how

You have to get the complete centre bracket to do this.
when you say upgrade I take it you mean to the rams being on the inside of the bracket like say a mid 80's engine.
for the price its gonna cost to convert to later style, I would be looking around for just a good secondhand trim motor on fleebay etc.
but it definitely can be done with very little work once you get the complete bracket.
The 140hp bracket that came with power trim from a 1977 would fit straight on for sure.
But you could also try fitting a much later fast track system that is even better.
these systems started on around 1993 60hp onwards and are always for sale on the auction sites, just watch the prices.
youl also be needing to get the old thru tube out of your bracket.
and fit the later tube with the newer bracket as it will be different.
(much easier to just find another trim motor) especially if your rams are ok !!
