  • 1996 50HP 2 stroke fuel ?

    I have a 50hp that runs out of gas at 1/2 a tank = 6 gallons left = won't run.

I have drained the tank and pulled the pickup tube out = not clogged and plenty long. The tank is clear of floating or sunken debris. I have checked the connecting hose from the tank to the motor, looks like new = bulb the same.

I have a theory but would like to hear yours.

    Thanks
    Dan

I would look at the fuel pump, and all connecting lines.

      Thanks Elton,

Any way to check the fuel pump short of replacing it?

I would check the gas filter, then make sure air displacement is taking place, either breather valve or half loosened gas cap depending on tank specs.

I'll check the gas filter, the tank is getting plenty of air I think, I'll try the half open gas cap just to be sure.

          Thanks

I don't think it is the filter because, I hooked up a 3 gal tank to the motor and it ran fine after running out on the onboard tank (12 gal.) which still had 6 gallons in it.

One other thing you mite look at is be sure the gas tank is vented.Testing the fuel pump is as easy as pulling the hose off the carb and starting the motor. But if you burn 1/2 tank before it happens won't do much good.If the tank is not vented you can run until the vaccume inside the tank over rides the pressure of the fuel pump.Ie when the suction pressure inside the fuel tank becomes more than the fuel pump can do,you run out of gas.I have seen the plastic fuel tanks collapes from suction.Had to do an emergency landing in a stearman once because a dirt dobber had plugged the vent hose.

I would first off say the tank is too low down for the pump to lift it.
if the tank at half full is lower than 24 inches from fuel inlet on engine then that could be your problem.
how low down is the fuel when at half tank, the level it cuts out at ?

maybe the tank needs to be turned around 180 degree's.
then when your running the pick up tube will be at the back and not the front of tank !!!!!
got to be the pick up is closer to the front, this would explain it easy.

i run with my pick up at the front, then if it runs out i have to turn it round and use the rest like a reserve tank !!!!
